Hiring in Las Vegas, People Not Resumes

Hiring in Las Vegas can be redundant sometimes. Talent is recycled, resumes all look the same, and personality is the most important trait for hospitality-driven companies in Las Vegas.

Emma Olive is third generation Las Vegas hospitality. She grew up here. Her mother and grandmother worked on the strip, both the old one and the new one. At 24 years old, she has an impressive background of experiences. From professional modeling and brand management to casino food and beverage operations, she is a seasoned Vegas pro.

However, all of that is still pretty boring when it comes to hiring in Las Vegas and talking about who Emma Olive actually is. On paper there are dozens and dozens of applicants that look and sound exactly the same: “I worked here. I worked there. I did this. I did that.” Every resume has the same common thread – a big question mark regarding the applicant’s personality.

From a resume, you’d never know that Emma has an infectious positive energy. You also wouldn’t know that the most intriguing thing about Emma as a potential hire is not the things she has done in the past, but the goals she has for her future. Even a cover letter wouldn’t capture the enthusiasm she has for wanting to join a growing team and pursue brand management and social marketing.

“You can teach skills and most people can learn almost anything,” Emma said, “but you can’t teach someone to be enthusiastic; you either are or you aren’t. It all depends on how much you want the job.”

Emma thinks it’s unfortunate that when it comes to hiring in Las Vegas, most interviews are scheduled (or not scheduled) based on just a resume. “There are a lot of really amazing and talented people that might not have the best resume. The people that lose out the most are the employers that skipped over them because they didn’t look good on paper,” Emma said.

“Applying with video was exciting because I know if I can get an interview my chances of getting the job are usually pretty good,” Emma said. Her assumptions were correct. The hiring team got in touch with Emma within 48 hours of submitting her application.

Here are a few tips for hiring in Las Vegas and connecting with applicants via video:

  • Look for applicants that talk about who they are, not what they’ve done. You already have their resume and employment history. A video application should tell you something beyond what’s in their resume.
  • Pay attention to the details. Is the applicant dressed professionally? Do they have a tidy background? Are they smiling? These details will give you insight into how much effort they are putting into their application and their personality.
  • Listen for clues that they’ve done their homework. Job seekers can apply to hundred of jobs an hour. Listen for insights they have to share about your organization that shows they truly care about being a part of your team.
  • Keep an open mind. Be open to applicants getting creative with their videos or telling jokes. A video application is an icebreaker and a little humor is a great way to learn about an applicant’s sense of humor.
