I think hierarchies maintain power based upon inertia more than hiding communications. Based upon your comments on religion, one would expect that the Internet would have dramatically increased the incidence of atheism — and no doubt it’s on the rise, doubling in seven years — but it’s still a small fraction of people who believe in a religion (see, e.g., http://www.pewforum.org/2015/05/12/americas-changing-religious-landscape/).

I see the freeing of communications as a gentle eroding of hierarchical power rather than a tsunami of change.
