The idea that all the other countries have “socialized” or “socialist” medicine is is one of the myths about healthcare that most Americans hold. Actually, other countries have a wide range of ways of paying for healthcare and amounts of government involvement in running it, from totally government run to totally privately run and financed under government regulation — like Switzerland. What the other countries have in common is not “socialist” medicine but a commitment to make sure that everyone has access to medical care, and to use the powers of government to make sure that happens.
