Every morning when I get to my local coffee shop I pick up the newspaper and flip right to the obituary section.
It’s a morning ritual that might seem a little weird but helps provide me with clarity for my life. An older man today said, “son you are too young to be looking at the obituary, I look at it everyday to see if any of my friends have passed and I’m 80 years old!”
I then explained to him the reason that I look at it everyday. It’s not to see if any of my friends have passed, it helps remind me that at the end of our life we have a couple of paragraphs that sum up everything we’ve accomplished.
Did you protect our country by serving in the military, leave behind kids and grandkids, or work a job you loved for 30 years?
Did you enjoy traveling, sailing around the ocean, or spending the winters skiing? In the end we have a couple of paragraphs in the newspaper that outlines the mark we left on this world.
As weird as it may feel try writing your own obituary column and see how powerful it could be. Include everything: your family, work, relationships, hobbies, travel, and all of your major achievements while on this earth.
It might be one of the hardest things you’ve ever had to put down on paper but once you do this I can guarantee you will have more clarity in your life.
