The UX of Learning UX is Broken

Bravo. As a recent graduate of the GA UXDI program, I often felt that the school was churning out people who could wireframe as opposed to actual UX Designers. I was very lucky in that my background, a BFA at RISD, was teaching me Design Thinking in the context of Fine Arts. It was not until after college that I started to learn about UX and Design thinking and realized, everything I had just done in 4 years could have been framed as UX and Design Thinking.

I wrote about my own struggle of making a sincere portfolio based on the projects given at GA. Once I realized that hundreds of other people had the EXACT SAME PROJECTS in their portfolio, I became quite discouraged and decided I needed to figure out a different way to present myself. I began looking at my background of being a project manager and general manager and figuring out how to frame this experience into UX, and it worked. Companies were excited to interview me because they saw that I had an understanding of UX in a different field, and was able to adapt and learn. In fact, one interviewer told me how they wanted to hire people for intern positions that had real world experience because the people they were hiring who had gone to college and then GA did not have the soft skills to succeed. They wanted to see that people had worked on teams, faced challenges, were actively learning about many different subjects.

A 10 week course alone is not a key to getting a job. One must understand the bigger picture.

I look forward to seeing the conversations that arise out of this, and hopefully will be able to contribute to this conversation as well.
