What to expect from E3 2016
By John Maku
CHICAGO — The annual Electronic Entertainment Expo, located at the Los Angeles Convention Center, will be held in the week of June 12–16.
The Expo, also known as E3, is a world-premier entertainment software and hardware convention. Many video game and software entertainment companies unveil their latest works at the show. The purpose of the event is for game developers to reveal or tease their products, and for companies to generate a product roadmap for the future.
According to the official expo website, one can only attend E3 if he/she is involved in the interactive entertainment industry, whether it be through software development or media coverage. The show is not open to the general public.
In addition, the cost for a 3-Day Show Floor pass is $995. This pass gives one access to all of the booths on the show floor from (all in Pacific Daylight Time) 12:00pm-6:00pm on June 14, 10:00am-6:00pm on June 15, and 10:00am-5:00pm on June 16.
For those not involved in the interactive entertainment industry, there are a multitude of methods to stream whichever company press conferences you may be interested in. The video game and entertainment websites GameSpot and IGN will be live streaming all of the company press conferences.
In addition, the official PlayStation Blog has announced it’ll be holding free live screenings of the Sony PlayStation conference at select movie theaters in North America. See bottom for a link to the site.
In terms of scheduling, Microsoft will be holding its Xbox press conference at 9:30am PDT on Jun e 13, while Sony will be holding its PlayStation press conference at 6:00pm PDT on June 13. Nintendo will be rounding off the conferences with its presentation at 9:00am PDT on June 14.
To get an idea of the expected level of attendance for E3 2016, one can look at the attendance data of the past 10 E3s:
As there has been a steady rise in attendance rate since 2009, the expected number of attendees at E3 2016 rests at or above 50,000 people.
The list of companies that will be exhibiting products, taken from the official E3 website, constitutes a similarly growing amount. Sony Computer Entertainment, Microsoft Corporation, Bethesda, Activision and Ubisoft Entertainment, to name a few, will be exhibiting several works at the show. Presently, there will be 246 participating companies at the 2016 expo, according to the official E3 2016 website.
The number of participating companies since 2005 is represented below:
A similar trend to the attendees, the amount of exhibiting companies has increased since 2008.
In order to get an idea of a typical E3 experience, a university student named Fil Sguros was interviewed on the subject. He is studying Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
When asked if he knew what the event was, he said yes. For him, the purpose of the event is to “get people hyped and excited about upcoming video games through showcases of gameplay footage and trailers.”
As he’s not a part of the industry, Sguros has not personally attended E3, and will not be attending this year’s E3. However, he has watched streams of various conferences in the past, including E3 2015. He fully intends on watching streams of this year’s conference, stating he’s very excited for it.
When asked about what news he’s excited for from the show, he said he’s looking forward to news on a Destiny* expansion, Dishonored 2*, and anything from developer Hideo Kojima*.
