Lawrence…..I acknowledge that what I am suggesting does not constitute charity. However I am suggesting that non governmental organizations are much more efficient providers of many social services especially those involving poverty alleviation, education and health. Many such NGOs are already direct and indirect beneficiaries of (smaller) government grants today, but winning such grants requires a lot of sophistication and gamesmanship which has little to do with the core mission of the charity in question. Moreover the granting process eats up a lot of organizational and government overhead that does little to address the needs of the poor. Therefore, I am suggesting that a more direct involvement of the citizenry in the oversight and delivery of social services, might, by virtue of its democratic roots, serve the poor much better than existing “entitlements”. Of course citizens would be free to pay all taxes due directly to the government if they didn’t want to be bothered or believed in the efficiency of government social services.
