Killing Excuses 2017: I Don’t Have Time to…

I‘m going to try to keep this short. After all, it’s about how to save time.

Family of 4, full time student and part time job, busy executive working your way up or your coworkers are morons? No matter the reason (read excuses), there is time. You just have to make health a priority.

I guarantee if you logged every minute of every day, you could find 20, 30, or 60+ minutes you waste on menial tasks.

  • Answering redundant emails*
  • Wasting time on the phone**
  • Searching through different snapchat filters to find the perfect puppy dog sad face because…
  • The line at Starbucks is too long (another time waster)
  • The most notorious one of them all, scrolling
  • and scrolling
  • and scrolling
  • and scrolling…. through Facebook.

Seriously! I’m not even taking into account binge watching TV, Netflix or Kodi*** (Spend $100. Save up to thousands.) episodes and reruns. Wasting time on TV, Facebook etc. counts double in bed. 1. It’s wasted time on Facebook and, 2. It’s disrupting sleep, which is way more important than some vague, pity party, cry for attention post by some random friend request.

I almost guarantee you have enough time for one or more workouts or meal prep sessions every day if you turned wasted time into health and fitness time. Let’s take a look at what I’m talking about.

Disclaimer: I HATE 7/21/28/90 day Challenges. Most of the time it is some money wasting scheme or bullshit do nothing quick fix health, fitness, diet, cleanse, get rich quick program. (Read how I feel about “Quick Fixes” Here)

So here goes….

2 Week Challenge

Week 1

Write down everything you do.

Example

  • 5:45am hit snooze
  • 6:08 wake up

Already found 23 mins. Could have made breakfast and skip fast food stop.

  • 6:09 Bathroom
  • 6:12 Make coffee

Make extra. Skip fast food.

  • 6:15–6:21 Scroll through Facebook

Another 6 min.

  • 6:22 drink 1 cup of coffee
  • 6:30 shower
  • 6:43 brush teeth
  • - 7:06 leave for work 6 min late
  • 7:40 swing in the fast food place for biscuit and another coffee

Should have made your own breakfast and extra coffee 7 mins.

  • 8:05 roll into work
  • 8:06–8:17 hear Arty tell you how great little Johnny is doing at soccer (even if they don’t keep score) and Mary tell you all the gossip about Jim and his wife.
If I hear one more story about Little Johnny I will stab my ears out with a dull pencil.

You didn’t care about Arty’s snot nosed kid, or that Jim is allegedly sleeping with his babysitter, especially since you know he is at the bowling ally getting drunk on a Tuesday night. Good job not engaging with Mary. Still, you wasted 11 minutes.

  • 8:26–8:53sit down at your desk and answer emails that the person already knows the answer too.

We will cut this time waste in half since you do have to reply to emails.** So 14 mins.

You haven’t even hit your first task yet and you have wasted enough time to get a good morning workout in and make breakfast. You still think you don’t have time?

Week 2

Cancel Facebook account for 7 days. Super easy to do. Here’s a link to the instructions on Facebook’s help page.

Facebook Deactivation Instructions

Every time you grab your phone and go for Facebook, it’s 10 squats, 5 push ups, 10 crunches. Ideally, do them at that moment. If your boss hates physical fitness, you can do them at home that night. DON’T CHEAT!!!!

By the end of week 2, you should be able to see how much time you really waste each day. Additionally, if you did actually do the squats push ups and crunches, you will have a good base started working out. Now it’s just a matter of reprioritizing.

We don’t want you to turn into a gym rat and abandon your family time, watching Criminal Minds or playing games, but just think about where you can sneak in a 5 or 10 minute mobility work out, or an AMRAP 15 program or switching 45 mins of TV for 30 min of basketball or climbing trees in the yard with the kids. After all, we’re here to improve your overall health, and part of that is the relationships you have with your family.

* Definitely check out Tim Ferriss’ 4 Hour Work Week. It’s amazing. It changed my life for the better, put a fire under my ass and set a lot of good things in motion. Check it out.

** Seriously. Its amazing book. If full lenght is too long, here is the Summary.

*** Kodi is the new “Black Box.” Free live TV, shows, movies, sports, everything. What is Kodi? and Where to get Kodi.
