Look Unto Him For Your Joy

“You have put gladness in my heart, More than in the season that their grain and wine increased.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭4:7‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

I believe that most of us are seeking happiness and contentment. We are in a constant quest to be happy. So much so that sometimes, we will do anything and everything to achieve happiness.

We look for jobs that will pay us well and make us happy. We look for clothes that will make us feel good and make us happy. We surround ourselves with people that make us smile and make us happy. And preferably, we would rather work in a place that we love and makes us happy.

All those things are great but they cannot be our source of happiness.

Our ultimate happiness is from God. Not man, not things, not even you.

God gives us joy, He puts gladness in our hearts. And material things or achievements are a weak substitute. Such things can only give you temporary happiness, that’s why we’re usually not content when we’ve achieved or acquired what we believed would make us happier.

Now God wants us to be happy with our jobs, our friends, our clothes, everything. But He also wants us to understand that they cannot be our source of happiness.

At the end of the day, God’s happiness is what we are all looking for, whether we realize it or not.

We want happiness that lasts.

We want to be able to find contentment even in the midst of chaos and sorrow.

And we can only find that in God.

I cannot pretend like I have achieved this level of contentment. There have been times I’ve tied my happiness to people, to clothes, to experiences and other things. Things that were temporal and clearly did not last. I was happy in that moment but when it was all said and done, those people or things couldn’t sustain my happiness. Why? Because they weren’t supposed to. A friend has told me several times to remember that we are not anyone’s Saviour.

We cannot fill the role of God in other people’s lives so we shouldn’t expect others to fill that role for us either.

Now I am not saying we should not dress as we would like, enjoy experiences, travel or make new friends. God wants us to be happy and have pleasurable experiences and He understands that other people and these things can serve as channels for us to enjoy His joy. He will send people and things your way to make you happy.

But remember that your happiness should not be founded on things or other people but it should be based on God.

Have a lovely week everyone.
