How Much Is Your Time Worth?

Here’s how to find out.

Don’t look at how much you get paid at your job.

Don’t look at how much time you work per week.

Look at ways you go out of your way to save money, and how much that costs you.

I really enjoy the Humans of New York Facebook page. It has great pictures, and great stories all the time. It’s astounding the amount of intelligence and beauty that humans possess.
Today, the page shared a post that really pissed me off.

What made me so angry about this post?

This guy is falling victim to several common mistakes.

Things that could be easily avoided with some economic common sense.

First, he’s allowing his emotions to control his actions. (Something I definitely get to examine about myself too) Look at the words he uses, “Burns me up… I’m gonna scream… Gonna explode.” The instant you allow your emotions to take over your decision making, you’re going to behave irrationally.

Second, he’s valuing his time at far less than it’s potential. Think about it, if he’s willing to walk 3 hours each day, to save $2.50 that means he’s valuing his time at around 80 cents an hour.

Third, he’s not thinking of all the possibilities. He’s just looking for somethign to complain about, and be the victim. He’s allowing an uncontrollable circumstance (the fare price) to suck up a lot of his time and energy. If he were to think of the possibilities, he would probably figure out a way to earn more than 80 cents in an hour, so he could afford to buy milk for his daughter, and take the subway too.

The lesson?

Think about your time as a resource, how are you spending it, and is that efficient. Don’t become a victim to the system and spend your time complaining about all the inconveniences you have to suffer.
