Day 14 Pixel Art Maker

Day 14 is in the books and week 3 is over. Today our instructor lost his voice completely. We spent pretty much the entire day practicing our DOM traversal and manipulation skills from yesterday’s lecture. We split up into two teams and practiced an agile workflow for a pixel art project. It was really fun. The project wasn’t too complicated, but it was a great way to practice our skills. You can check out what we made here if you’re interested pixelartdemo.surge.sh. We are going to add a lot more features to it this weekend, but you will get the general idea from playing around with it. You can select a color from the palette and make some pixel art of your own.
We did a good amount of planning on the front end about the best way to tackle the project. We created a quick Trello board to help keep us on track. I created the repository on my GitHub and added everyone as collaborators. We had quite a few issues with merge conflicts throughout the process. I definitely want to research that more because we lost a lot of time troubleshooting that.
The best part of the project was working with the team. Two of us worked on the javascript logic and DOM manipulation while two others worked on the HTML structure and CSS styling. We all chipped in to help out if anyone got stuck on a particular issue. It was great to hear everyone’s ideas and strategies on how to tackle the problem. We all learned a lot and will be better prepared for the next group project.
I want to say that this week was the most fun yet, but that doesn’t feel completely honest. Honestly every week has been a blast so far. I really loved learning the javascript logic in weeks one and two. This week was extra fun because we were actually able to make a couple of small apps. Next week we’re learning jQuery, AJAX, Bootstrap, Wireframing, and promises. That’s a big week! I’m excited though because after next week we will have a lot more tools in our belt. Time to go enjoy the weekend!
14 down 86 to go!
