Taking Time To Listen To Yourself

There is such a beautiful stillness at 4am.

I’ve always been an early riser and there is just something so special about that time of day. I still have very young kids so if you want any time to yourself it either happens very early or very late.

I try and spend this time in moments of stillness and reflection because, like you, my life has a lot going on.Today I have to sort through a whole range of needs and issues and requests and invitations. Like you, I have to make choices. I have to deal with complexity. Right now, it’s complicated for me by this injury I have been carrying which has had me on my back for three weeks. The demands upon my life has not changed but, in the short term, my capacity to deal with them has.

My first point is that to make good choices among all the options we face we need these dedicated moments of stillness. Without them we can easily end up on either end of a spectrum. On one end is avoidance. Here is where we use procrastination of any form to get away from making choices at all. We might use food, TV, sleeping or anything else to get away from making real and committed choices. The other end of the spectrum is where we make impulsive or spur of the moment choices without any deeper thought.

The sweet spot in the middle is the place of reflection and stillness and listening. From this place we may not always receive direct communication from God but we are far more likely to make better choices and move in congruence with our deeper values and goals.

So, my friend, please make time to listen to yourself in moments of stillness and silence. Just MAKE THE TIME. Once you have listened to your heart, back yourself, make the choice and then get it done!
