Why I Think We All Need a Bucket list

BUCKET LIST MATTERS. I’ve realized that I long time ago but it took me a while before I came to my senses that what I’ve written on it are actually my goals meant to be fulfilled and not just something to dreamed on. Seeing people achieve their own goals is not just a motivation that makes me write this but more importantly, a lesson that nothing will happen until I act on it; that is why for the past few weeks, I’ve been busying myself on updating my list and thinking of what should I do to finally put a check in any one of them.

It helps us realize what we want

We probably been in that phase in our lives when we ask ourselves “what do I really want to do with my life?” and it bothers us so much that we either ended up procrastinating and going with the flow of uncertainty or, realizing that we don’t have much time and therefore, we start to collect ourselves and write down everything we want to do. I don’t mean that the former brings us nowhere because surely we all have somewhere to go its’s just that there is no endpoint and it’s not certain whether we will like where we will be. And I believe it’s important to like where we will be. Hence, the second option is better because it gives us more chances to decide for ourselves and at the end of the day, that is truly what we want− to have some sense of control.

More than that, it is not just about making a list of what we want to do; we must determine how we will be able to achieve those goals we envisioned. I remember every so often what my professor said about setting goals when I’m about to add some things in my bucket list, it must be realistic and measurable in such a way that we can see progress toward our objectives. We must be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound) and so our goals.

Personally, I add even silly things in my bucket list only because it makes me happy like, “I want to be able to touch a real blonde hair.” and so I did when my favorite YA author came here (Philippines) last year; I asked her if I could touch her hair (I felt weird for asking it too but she agreed though) and that put a check on my long list. But of course, there are other goals such as “I want to be able to provide for my family.” “I want to travel the world”, “I want to be the President.” that aren’t as easy as touching a real blonde hair but as long as we can dream of it, then it is possible.

It gives us direction

To live a life without direction is hard because it is a sure waste of time and that is to say that we don’t have all the time in the world. To accept the changes we might see in ourselves as the result of the decisions and actions of other people instead of ours is even harder, but, the real killer is realizing that we have not accomplish anything for ourselves or for our community just because we never spare a minute to think and reflect of what we really what to do with our life.

Every day we make decisions, set priorities, and make visions because this is how we conduct life. So, it is important for us to learn and to realize that setting goals give us something to hold onto; it help us express what we truly want and more importantly it make us believe in ourselves.

and thus, it makes us happy

The point is, we know what we want and we’re going to make it happen. It’s time to make those things in our bucket list come true and be happy.
