Don’t Let it Slide — A True Friend
“They are my best friends because they love and accept me just the way I am.” -A Lazy Idiot
I am writing today to smash the dominant world view that says love and friendship are synonyms for acceptance and tolerance.
Accepting and tolerating a lack of character is not the sign of a true friend; it is the sign of a lack of love. If the measuring stick of loving friendship is acceptance of who you are then your best friend is the drive through employee that handed you your lunch today. Why? Because they accept you just the way you are… they don’t care about you. Only someone who doesn’t care anything about you accepts you just as you are. The people who love you are the people who demand from you the best version of what you can be!
“I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.” -Revelation 2:3–4 ESV
Revelation chapters two and three are a perfect example of a loving relationship. A loving relationship celebrates the good while still demanding the best.
A true friend refuses to allow someone they love to stay the way they are. Jesus is the friend that sticks closer than a brother and He demands that you die to yourself and become a new creation. All your old lazy slothful selfish tendencies must pass away and behold all things become new! Jesus is the blue print of what love in a relationship is because He demands the highest standard from those He loves.
Be a best friend to someone today and quit letting it slide.
