Why Tithe?

“On that day let him who is on the housetop, with his belongings in the house, not come down and go inside to carry them away; and likewise let him who is in the field not turn back. Remember Lot’s wife! Whoever tries to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will preserve and quicken it.” -‭‭Luke‬ ‭17:31–33‬ ‭AMP

Money and possessions are the measurement of the value you have created for others with your life.Your stuff is what you have received in exchange for your best life. Put simply, your money and possessions are your life.

I’ll prove it to you. In the United States of America if you break in to my house to take my stuff I have every legal right to take your life. To think my plasma tv is worth a human life seems out of balance on the surface, but the reality is someone trying to take my things is trying to take my life and I have a right to protect my life!

Possessions are not just a measure of any old part of life, they are the measure of the best part of life. You don’t get paid to sit on your butt and watch tv. You are paid when you are actively engaged in your most creative talents and gifts. When you serve your fellow man with the best you have you are rewarded. Your things are what you have left of the best of your past. In Malachi chapter 1 God is not pleased when His people offered broke cripple sickly offerings. He is still not pleased when all we offer is the worst of us. He wants it all. God deserves the best of us not the rest of us.

Jesus challenged the rich young ruler to give up his entire life when he asked him to go and sell his possessions. He asks nothing less of us. God instituted the tithe because He knew if a man was not willing to surrender 10% of his past he will never be willing to lose 100% of his future. A man who seeks to save his own life will lose it.

I want to paraphrase the passage at the beginning of this article to draw out this point In the Word of God. It says, in the last days when the Lord comes don’t try and save your possessions. A man who seeks to save his own life (his possessions) will lose it, but a man who loses his life (his possessions) will preserve and quicken it.

God doesn’t ask for 10% of your money he demands 100% of your life. If you won’t surrender 10% of your best past you’ll never give Him 100% of your future.
