“the EU is an economic and political disaster zone: it is a machine for imposing austerity and injustice” perhaps under current leadership but Macron-Schulz or ideally Hamon (if Melenchon got out of the way)-Schulz partnership would shift this pretty quickly, particularly if Renzi or the PD led by someone else is also in power in the third (minus UK) power of the new EU: Italy.

The fundamental mistake of the referendum campaign was allowing the Leave side to paint the EU as an unchangeable organisation, a regulator rather than a democratic supranational body which can be right-wing or left-wing depending on the make-up of those who rule it through the leadership of the individual nations as outlined above (at the European Council) and in the European Parliament.
