Week 4 of 9 — Bitmaker Labs Web Development Bootcamp

It has been an awesome (but strange) four weeks. I’m reminded of how much I’ve learned and held onto with each new assignment. Assignment boundaries are slowly being lifted away, and creative foresight is slowly taking shape through all of my recently acquired skills. But why has it been strange might you ask? Tetris. Yes, tetris (kind of). In the past week, I have had extremely lucid dreams about code. I’m not entirely sure if that’s due to caffeine saturation or whether I’m slowly going insane! BUT, the Tetris Effect seems to reduce the prospect of the latter.

The Tetris effect (also known as Tetris Syndrome) occurs when people devote so much time and attention to an activity that it begins to pattern their thoughts, mental images, and dreams. — http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetris_effect

So with this I think it’s safe to say that all of the coding I have been doing has got my mind mapping thoughts out in new ways, and ultimately proves the effectiveness of the bootcamp. After approaching some experienced coders online with this, most agree that it is something that happened to them when they began seriously coding as well. Others have told me that they still have these dreams frequently and actually end up writing some decent code in their sleep. “I have woken from a dead sleep at 3 am with a bug fix or enhancement screaming in my brain. I get up, go code, then go back to bed,” a coding enthusiast told me. Solving problems in your sleep? Can’t get much more efficient than that! Jokes and dreaming aside, I am thrilled with how much I’ve grasped so far. We’ll be diving head first into JavaScript over the next two weeks, and I’m eager to partner it with the Ruby and Rails apps I’ve been building recently.
