Two Things I Learned About Myself From a Free Class on CodyApp
Meghan Currie is a yoga instructor on the CodyApp. She has bundles you can purchase to follow her classes, which are mostly intermediate classes. When I was exploring the website I saw she had a free class and I decided to attend it.
As I rolled out my yoga mat in our small apartment’s den I fully expected to be super sweaty and have bruises on my legs from hitting the table. What I found was, for the first twenty minutes or so of this flow, I was just sitting there listening with my eyes closed.
Meghan spoke for a while about “staying here”. What she spoke most about was fearing our pain. By fearing it we let it control us. By pushing it away we give it more power over us. We fear our fear. But staying with the fear lets us become more intimate with it.
As someone who is a firm believer in psychotherapy and talking out feelings, this concept resonated with me.
Being present with yourself and your emotions is at the center of the mindfulness practice that is so popular right now. I have used mindfulness for a while to temper my panic disorder and help myself be calmer despite the sea in my head. I have been using mindfulness to stay out of the attic in my head and brush aside the pains I had felt so that I could enjoy the moment.
But instead of pushing away the pains, the first thing I learned from this class was to dissolve the pains by being present with those pains. The stress, emotional mess, and flood of thoughts in my mind were eroded away just by staying in that moment with those things.
The second thing I learned came from the quote that Meghan gave 6 minutes in by Anatole France:
“You learn to speak by speaking, to study by studying, to run by running, to work by working; in just the same way, you learn to love by loving.” — Anatole France
There is only one way to learn how to recover from the things that ail us. There is only one way to learn to be more open-minded. There is only one way to learn to love.
The only way is love.
