Stacking stuff up in Adobe Illustrator

One of the most common tasks I perform in prepress is to stack multiple copies of a piece of artwork across the artboard. I came up with a script that does the work for me.

Say I’m setting something up for a 48 x 96 sheet of material, and I have to make multiple copies of a piece of artwork that is 8.5 x 8.5

A big, mostly empty artboard with one copy of whatever on it.

I can select the art and run the script to get as many copies as I need:

The Stacker opens a dialog that allows me to punch in some variables.
And the end result. The stacker makes the copies and centers them on the artboard

Two things to note:

  1. The Stacker will fill complete all rows and columns, so sometimes you get a few more pieces than you need. In prepress, this is actually a convenience.
  2. The Stacker will automatically center everything, so you can start from wherever.

You can download the script from my Dropbox. If you need help figuring out how to install scripts, google it!
