Justin Timberlake Announced for Super Bowl Halftime Show

In a video posted to Twitter featuring his apparent best friend Jimmy Fallon, Justin Timberlake recently confirmed that he will once again take to the stage to perform during the 2018 Super Bowl halftime show. This will mark the third time in his career that that former N’Sync star has performed at the Super Bowl, and the first time since Timberlake and Janet Jackson were involved in the infamous ‘wardrobe malfunction’ incident during the 2004 Super Bowl fourteen years ago.

As soon as Timberlake confirmed that he would be headlining this year’s halftime show, many in the media immediately began speculating as to whether Jackson might once again join him on stage. Unfortunately, anyone who had hopes of seeing a repeat of the ‘Nipplegate’ controversy is set to be disappointed after numerous sources seemed to confirm that Jackson would be skipping this year’s Super Bowl due to her ongoing tour commitments. This means that it will be up to JT to ‘bring sexy back’ to the Super Bowl all on his own.

Although the 10-time Grammy winner should prove to be a popular choice, many insiders were still surprised that the NFL would choose Timberlake after the huge controversy surrounding he and Jackson’s 2004 performance. In fact, there had been rumors that the NFL had banned both JT and Jackson from ever performing during the Super Bowl again. Nonetheless, Timberlake’s team had been in negotiations with the NFL since last September in an effort to get him the headline gig at this year’s halftime show.

There have been rumors circulating for some time now that the singer is set to release a new album sometime in 2018, and it would seem that his team views his Super Bowl performance as an ideal way to generate interest in the forthcoming album. It would seem that this plan is a good one, at least if Timberlake can garner even close to as large of an audience as tuned in to see Lady Gaga perform at last year’s halftime show. More than 150 million people watched Gaga perform at Super Bowl LI, which made it the most-watched musical performance of all time.

With his performance at this year’s Super Bowl, Timberlake will become the first artist to ever perform during three different halftime shows. However, this year will be the first time that he is actually the headliner. Back in 2004, Janet Jackson was the headliner and Timberlake only made a special guest appearance. The singer’s first appearance came in 2001 when he performed with N’Sync at Super Bowl XXXV. Still, it is his second performance with Jackson that sticks in most people’s minds.

Despite the rumors about a new Justin Timberlake album, sources have confirmed that the singer will be performing more of his older, classic songs. Moreover, Timberlake himself put to bed any possibility of a new wardrobe malfunction this year when, during an interview on NFL Sunday Night Football, he vowed that it wouldn’t happen again.

Super Bowl LII takes place in Minneapolis on February 4th. The game and halftime show will be aired on NBC, and users can also view JT’s performance live online.
