The modern Intranet

Nicely put Martin. Your characterization of what a modern intranet needs to be is bang on, but I would add a few important things to the list…

Don’t force tools: A modern intranet needs to be a connection point — not something that forces teams to use particular tools. Document collaboration should happen in the file collaboration tools (Google Docs, Office 365, etc.). A great intranet links all these in.

Enable curation and ownership: The most common cause of intranet death is information clutter. Make sure that content has clear ownership by topic (each topic should have its own subject matter expert). And include the tools/data required for easy curation to keep things fresh and organized.

Target information: Ensure you publish the right information to the right people. That is key for keeping things relevant and easy to consume.
