DRIVERLESS CARS

In the past, no one would ever imagine that a vehicle navigate with little or no human input. Now, we have driverless cars that can drive itself. The driverless cars, Autonomous cars, or self-driving cars can sense their environment using sensors, ‘radar’, ‘GPS’ and ‘computer vision’ fitted in the car. These features thus make navigation very easy and effective and only navigates pre-programmed routes.

TESTING

Automobile companies are planning big in order to launch driverless cars in the next few years. Companies like Google, Delphi Automotive and cars like BMW, NISSAN, Audi, Mercedes and Toyota among many others have embarked on tests or have scheduled tests and date of release to the market while others are planning to venture into the electric car market. For example, “Google’s fleet of experimental drone cars have already completed over 500,000 accident-free driverless miles around San Francisco.” For Audi, their driverless cars are expected in 2017. Meanwhile in Netherlands, two autonomous driverless buses would be launched in December, 2015 to convey passengers from a train station to the university. The speed of the buses would be maximum of 50 km/h.

SAFETY CONCERNS FOR AUTONOMOUS CARS

This is a major concern of regulators and manufacturers of autonomous vehicle. Most of the accidents that occur in human driven cars are mostly caused by human errors. The important things that a driverless car must have are good road awareness and quicker reaction time than people. Also there is the question of if driverless cars would obey traffic lights. Google cars have been involved in one or two accidents in the recent pasts. Despite, all these concerns, it is good to note that the car industry and regulators are partnering to ensure the improvement of driverless cars.

There is no doubt that driverless cars would soon be a common feature in our world. Tech experts are now talking about driverless long distance train!
