“Sometimes it isn’t just that the craft is lacking excellence, simply the story telling as it is presented lacks, and what it lacks is not really a measurement of excellence. It is lacking creativity and imagination, instruments of a compelling universal story. Usually out of fear of the “message getting lost”. It suffers from an ulterior motive that has nothing to do with art.”
I think this is where, for me, excellence still applies. The lack of creativity and imagination and a compelling or universal story for me also is a lack of excellence. And perhaps you’ve hit on something with the idea of fear, but it may be even more than fear of the “message getting lost.” It may be a fear of being real, or the fear of taking a risk for your art and writing the story you know you’re meant to write, but are too afraid to write.
I appreciate this conversation, Joe. Thanks for chiming in. Let’s keep the conversation going, my friend.
