I completely agree. As I said, it is a hugely complex topic, and something that requires serious research.

Until then, we are all just kind of farting in the wind when it comes to speculating as to the “whys.”

But I still understand the human desire to want to explore possible answers to the why questions, because when bad things happen, trying to figure out a reason why they might have happened – even if we are totally wrong – often brings a measure of comfort.

Then again, speculation like that can cause harm or hurt, too. I can completely empathize with those who feel like any kind of “why are they like that” questioning gives too much attention and energy to the perpetrators. I totally understand that feeling, too.

It is a difficult subject to discuss – beyond talking about personal experience – in an open public layperson’s forum, basically. I am not comfortable saying “don’t talk about it unless you are an expert in the field” though. I guess maybe I would just hope people realized the limits of their knowledge (in terms of the actual current research behind sexual assault) before diving in, perhaps.
