Starting out.

Writing is an irrational pursuit. It’s time-consuming, difficult to do well, and impossible to master. Worst of all, it leaves you exposed: in the internet era, your output — however half-baked it might be — is eternalized the moment you press send. I’ve spent my entire life watching my mother — author, journalist, lover of words — agonize over the phrasing she regrets or the word she should’ve chosen. I’ve known since I could walk that I didn’t want to be a writer.

And yet. There have been moments in my life that were so incredible that I felt compelled to record the experience in writing. A photograph can capture a face or a landscape, but words alone can express the sudden sharp revelation that you’re living in a golden age of your own life. Travel and love in particular have always moved me to write. And however much it hurts, I recognize the value of the discipline and self-definition that writing for the public requires.

So here’s a blog. I’ll use this space to talk about what I’m thinking, what I’m reading, and who I’m listening to. My goals are to refine my voice and provide my own perspective on the topics I find interesting. And I’ll try to leave myself open to criticism and debate without embarrassing myself too much.
