I am designing stuff

So does this makes me a designer? Can I be a professional designer? Can I get a real job in design? Who decides these things?

I am working as an application developer. On the sideline, I do freelancing in graphic design. Simple things like social media posts, flyers, brochure, ebook covers, etc.

Working as a freelancer in design, I’ve learned that, my design is never the best. There is always a more beautiful, eye-catching design. The world is full of creative people. Sometimes, when I join design contests, I’m astonished on how fast people can come up with designs while I’m still doing my work. I ask myself, does this mean that I’m not good? Sometimes I feel that but I have also learned that being not good at something means there is nothing else you are good at. So what I did was cross out some design categories that I know I’m not good at. Example, logo design. Vector design is really not my thing. It stresses me so I avoid it entirely. I focused on the design categories that I like to do such as the ones mentioned above. And I thrived.

Reading my first review from a client was like being in concert with Mozart conducting. After the first client, I wanted more clients. Here’s what I’m doing:

  • I take lessons from my rejected designs
  • I take lessons from other people’s design (e.g. on how they mix typography and create a color theme)
  • I read design blogs and articles. I follow design discoveries (new resources)
  • I created a Behance account and just scrolled through a lot of inspiration

Here is what I will do:

  • Never stop learning
