What To Do After A Break Up

Just got out of a relationship and still follow your ex on Instagram? Do you hate seeing their “better than ever selfies” or their “it’s 3am and I’m poppin bottles at the club” videos on their Instagram stories? Well here are some ways to avoid their profile without unfollowing them.

I just recently broke up with my boyfriend about two months ago. Luckily, the break up ended on a good note, however, even after two months, I can admit, I am not fully “over it”. I find it harder to forget about the relationship because whenever I open any social network, such as Instagram, I will always see his face plastered everywhere! It’s as if Instagram is taunting me! I didn’t want to block or unfollow him because we ended on good terms, however I didn’t want to constantly see him every time I opened Instagram. Therefore, I learned some privacy settings to change on my profile to limit the number of times I saw his profile.

Last year, Instagram launched a new feature where users can share a photo or video with their followers that disappears after 24 hours. The first thing you see at the very top of your Instagram feed is all your followers’ stories. Instagram filters your followers and selects the order of Instagram stories specifically for you. How do they determine this ranking system? Based on several tests, online sources and insight into Instagram’s public algorithm data it would seem to suggest that whoever visits your profile the most (not necessarily who likes, comments, or tags you in posts), would also rank higher in story feed priority. Therefore, since my ex and I did date for 9 months, it is fair to state that we visited each other’s profiles numerous times when dating. Which means that his stories are usually always the first ones featured on my feed. Not only did this make it harder for me to not stalk him, but it also made it harder for me to get over him. Therefore, I decided to mute his stories.

How to mute someone’s story:

If you don’t want someone’s story to appear in the bar at the top of your Feed, you can mute their story:

1. At the top of your Feed, tap and hold the profile picture of the person whose story you’d like to mute

2. Select Mute [username]

Stories you’ve muted will appear at the end of the bar at the top of Feed, and won’t have a colorful ring around them when they’re updated. Muted stories won’t automatically play when you watch stories.

Muting someone’s story is different from unfollowing them, and you’ll still see their posts in your Feed.

Every time I wanted to search for people or hashtags, I would have to use the search bar at the top of Search & Explore. When clicking on the search bar, Instagram has a list of Suggested Searches that are filtered for your specific profile. No one knows exactly how Instagram organizes this list, however, through my expertise of being an active user, I believe it deals with the amount of times you searched their profile. Once again, since I did date my ex for 9 months, we did search each other’s profile multiple times in the search bar, therefore, my ex was always the first Suggested Search in my list. To stop seeing his name, I decided to delete or reset my Suggested Search History.

How to delete suggestion search in Instagram:

1. Tap to search menu and then tap the search bar at the top of the screen

2. Below Top or Recent, tap and hold the search you’d like to hide from your history

3. Tap Hide

And if you recently stalked your ex, you can also delete your history by:

1. Tap to go to your profile

2. Tap settings in the top right

3. Scroll to the bottom then tap Clear Search History

These are the two privacy settings I changed for my Instagram profile and has helped me a lot. If there are any more suggestions, please do not hesitate to share; we are all in this together.
