The problem of rural electrification in high coverage rate countries: Paraguay

With near 98% of electricity coverage rate, there are 150.00 paraguayans without electricity, mostly of them in the Chaco region. It is a paradox that a country with 99,5% of the electricity generation supplied by the Itaipú hydro, it has no electricity to supply the households in the Chaco region. And this is because the diffilculties to extend the distribution grid to this low density population area with dispersed houses.

Thinking in the box, in the conventional electrification mode: grid extension, is the most important barrier to get the” sustainable energy for all”. For this remote and dispersed households, distributed generation, off grid electricity supply is the solution. Solar generation is highly recommended in a region with 250 sunny days per year.
