Finding Oneself

Everyone, sometime in their life, has trouble figuring out who they are; or who they are meant to be. Some people find themselves early in life, and some much later. I would like to think this article will help people understand the importance of finding oneself and how to do so.

Early in life we are faced with a choice; a rather intimidating one at that: What career path to follow. Knowing yourself is a key element to knowing how to choose (that is, without being miserable or feeling unfulfilled the rest of your life). Some people just seem like they have all their shit together, that they are in their element and are doing what they love. You? You don’t know where to start because you don’t even know which direction to take. You enjoy many things… but are you good enough at any of those things to turn them into a career? Will it really make you happy? They say if you enjoy your job it won’t feel like work. And I’m sure that is everyone’s goal. Not to mention, not all career paths will pay the bills. Then what?

Well First off, once have chosen what career path you want to go into, that is what you have chosen to work on for the rest of your life. Yeah sure, you get those who dramatically change their careers at middle age, but you surely would rather figure out what career would be best for you right in the beginning. That way you have more time to hone your skills, study and experiment.

But before figuring what that career path is, you need to find yourself. Know what you are good at; are passionate about and what you love. How does one do that?

Spend time with yourself. Try out new hobbies that interest you. Soak up information on things you already know you like. Other newly found likes and dislikes may stem from those things. Do research. Read books. Listen to music. Surround yourself with things you like and enjoy, whether it’s a style of clothing you like, a genre of music. Create moodboards — pictures of things that inspire you. Anything. And when you find that special thing you just love to do, research the community involved. Can one make a living off it? Even if it doesn’t seem possible, if you know this is the thing that you are passionate about and thrive doing it, you should pursue it. Give it your all. Study it; practice it; and hone your skills.

My father always says “You can do anything, but be the best at it.” That makes sense to me. Be the best at what you love doing. Work hard. Inspire. And never give up on something you are passionate about.
