I just Googled Gates to look into this and his wealth reportedly increased by $15 billion just between 2013 and 2014. I suspect in has case, and probably some of the others, he’s just making money faster than he can give it away (“can” meaning faster than he can figure out where to give it responsibly, with due diligence, etc).
