Until the Robot Cars Arrive, Here Is How Much You’re Paying Per Year of Car Ownership
Nicole Dieker

I spent just over $1,300 on car-related expenses last year, although I was away about 30% of the time so would have spent more on gas if I’d been here more. This year will be much higher because my beloved 2000 Civic had serious problems in January and I ended up determining that it was time to buy a newer car (which I knew I’d have to do this year anyway, as my mechanic had warned me that my car would likely not pass inspection without significant work). Currently at about $15,200 but the bulk of that ($14K) was the purchase price of the car + sales tax, so I’d expect next year it’ll be significantly lower.
