If you don’t let universities have non-profit status anymore, they’re likely going to lose out on at least some of their donations (since many people donate for tax deduction purposes) and then the sticker price will go up even more, particularly at smaller, less prestigious institutions that are already likely to have smaller endowments. And they’ll be able to offer less in terms of scholarships and grants. So categorizing them as for profits will actually reduce access and increase costs.
