Fancy Feast: Gladwell Shames Bowdoin For Choosing Food Over Financial Aid

Smith does indeed have great food and good financial aid, I can vouch for both. Those two things are not mutually exclusive and while I certainly see the argument about how certain amenities can drive up the cost of college unnecessarily, I’m not sure how much food costs really account for that. Bowdoin has responded by saying that dining operations are actually self-supporting from students paying for meal plans and that thus they’re not using any endowment money that could be used for financial aid on dining.

Meanwhile Vassar’s food is provided by Sodexo, which has a less than stellar record on both food safety and workers’ rights over the years. So they (allegedly) save money by getting crappy food from a crappy company.
