So Coldplay dropped their latest song in the 2017 Brit Awards to the super excitement of their fans, as well as fans of the American DJ duo — The Chainsmokers — who they collaborated with. Needless to say this has got us all on YouTube searching for “Something Just Like This”, once again swearing our allegiance to the band categorised as one of the best-selling music artists in the world.
Here are a few Coldplay facts you probably should know on your journey to eternal fandom of the British Rock band:
1. Before Christening the band “Coldplay”, the quartet was first named “Pectoralz”, and then “Starfish”
2. The band was formed in 1996 by Chris Martin and lead guitarist Jonny Buckland while they were still at University College London.
3. Coldplay’s debut album was originally going to be named, “Don’t Panic”, and then “Yellow”. The reason why it was changed to “Parachutes” was because they earned a reputation of being depressing.
4. Coldplay declined offers from Coca-cola and Gatorade to use their songs (“Trouble” for the first, and “Yellow” for the second) in advertisements.
5. The title of Coldplay’s fourth studio album, “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends”, was taken from a painting by Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo.
6. Chris Martin was inspired to name Colplay’s hit “Yellow” by that title because he spotted a Yellow Pages book while trying to give a name to the song.
7. Odd number albums are not their favourite, and they thought that their fifth (Mylo Xyloto) would be a disaster.
8. Joe Satriani filed a lawsuit against them claiming that “Viva La Vida” had lifted segments of his “If I Could Fly”
9. “Lost + “, “Lost @”, “Lost?”. “Lost — “, and “Lost!” are five different versions of the same song.
10.The Blue Room was their first release on a major label, after signing to Parlophone.
11. Tim Rice-Oxley of the band Keane (recognisable by their song “Everybody’s Changing”) was asked by Chris Martin to be Coldplay’s keyboard player but Rice-Oxley refused.
12. Chris Martin was arrested for attacking a paparazzi car in Australia in 2003.
13. Chris wrote “Speed of Sound” in an attempt to capture the rollercoaster of feelings on the birth of his daughter, Apple
14. Chris Martin learnt the phonetic movements of the lyrics to “The Scientist” because he had to sing it backwards for the music video.
15. The band has won a total of 58 awards throughout their career, including 4 Billboard Music Awards, 7 Grammy Awards and 8 Brit Awards.
