A rare and fatal form of aggressive cancer, mesothelioma occurs on the lining of tissue (mesothelium) that covers most of the body’s internal organs. Medical practitioners categorize mesothelioma into different types, depending on the affected part of the mesothelium. The tissue that covers the lungs (pleura) is most often affected by mesothelioma. This is known as pleural mesothelioma.
Other types of rare mesothelioma affect tissue surrounding the testicles and heart, as well as tissue in the abdomen. Medical and scientific research point to asbestos as the primary cause of mesothelioma. Over 80 percent of asbestosis and mesothelioma patients had job-related exposures to asbestos.
While there are mesothelioma treatments available, the possibility of a cure is nonexistent for many individuals.
