Daredevil: “New York’s Finest”
Daredevil is a Netflix Marvel television show that is based on the superhero of the same name. He was created by the famous writer Stan Lee and artist Bill Everett.
The show is about a lawyer named Matt Murdock who dresses up as Daredevil to stop crime from happening in New York City. He beats up criminals and leaves them for the police or threatens to come back if they continue their crime.
This episode has Daredevil and The Punisher fighting each other on a philosophical level.
The episode raises the question of whether killing a murderer is justify. It reminds us of the debate of capital punishment in America. Capital punishment is currently used in 31 states by the federal government and U.S. military.
Murdock wakes up and realizes he has been chained to a rooftop by Frank Castle, aka The Punisher. Murdock tries to learn more about Castle by asking him questions about his past. The conversation escalates to a debate whether to disable murderers or kill them.
Murdock challenges Frank’s belief by claiming that every criminal deserves a chance at redemption. Murdock is a Catholic and it plays an important part in his life. The Catholic faith talks about redemption in sin, so Murdock applies that to his role as Daredevil. He punishes criminals by beating them up and gives them a chance to repent from their ways.
I admire Murdock moral code of not killing and giving criminals a second chance to redeem themselves. I think it’s fair that we give people second chances when they make a mistake.
Castle replies that the criminal could go back doing the same illegal activity even after serving time. Some criminals do go back to their ways after serving time. Castle believes by killing the murderers, it would prevent future crime committed by them.
Castle’s way is extreme, but he kills murderers and horrible criminals. His methods prevent future crimes committed by these criminals. These actions might help lower the crime rate and keep people safe.
This episode was thought-provoking to its’ audience. Daredevil is a great Netflix show full of action scenes and mature themes. It not only entertains its’ audience, but makes them think about important issues.
