Well, frig, maybe we should just have another election already

Whatever happens tonight, it’s hard to imagine anyone actually governing tomorrow — As I write this, droves of folks are trudging to their local school gymnasium to cast their ballot. The top two contenders are not just disliked, but desperately so. Both Justin Trudeau and Andrew Scheer have slapped each other around to the point that they’re both pretty bruised. Trudeau…

Canada’s Nationalist Gets a Polite Refusal

The international club of nationalist politicians is big, diverse, and still growing. Matteo Salvini, Nigel Farage, Marine Le Pen, Jimmie Akesson, Geert Wilders-they may not be national leaders, but their populist approach has bent the rules of politics in their favor. Maxime Bernier wants to add a Canadian name to…

Under the Liberals, Canadian government support for Kurds fighting ISIL ground to a halt

Canada has done plenty to “help, support and strengthen our local allies” in the Middle East, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau said Friday. But over the past four years, Trudeau’s government has worked to slowly end support to those partners, specifically to the Kurdish people. According to government reports and interviews…

Nearly Everything About Canada’s Federal Election Sucked

Voters go to the polls on Monday to vote in an election so nasty, so depressing, so ugly that, honestly, Russia meddling in it might have been an improvement. From the obsessive focus on superficial issues like whether Andrew Scheer is really an insurance wizard or not to Justin Trudeau’s blackface scandal to the distressing explosion of fake news and misinformation in the final weeks-this election has had it all, and all of it was horrible.

I can’t believe the Liberal Party wants a Department of Peace, but here we are.

Proof for the old adage that all Liberal policy is just NDP policy from years gone by, the Liberal Party is pledging to create some kind of peacenik office for hippy dipply global affairs. From the Liberal platform: We will establish the Canadian Centre for Peace, Order, and Good Government…

Ottawa halts weapon sales to Turkey after it invades Syria

The Canadian government has suspended new weapons sales to Turkey as its NATO ally invades northern Syria. Global Affairs Canada confirmed that Ottawa has “temporarily suspended new export permits to Turkey.” Canada joins fellow NATO members Germany and France in pausing military sales to Ankara, as the Turkish army pushes…

Prison breaking-point: Canada’s jail system is in crisis, and that affects all of us

On the list of issues to be raised in this mad dash of a federal election, it’s perhaps understandable that the state of Canada’s prisons is pretty low. Indigenous people are still waiting for clean drinking water, provinces continue to fight over pipeline projects, climate change alters best-laid plans, and a housing crisis and potential economic recession are leaving urban Canadians nervous. Amidst all that, why would voters care about the treatment of criminals? Besides, aren’t poor conditions in jails a feature, rather than a bug? The logic has long been that if you don’t want to face that kind of miserable treatment, just don’t commit crimes.

With friends like these…

The Kurdish people are currently seeing exactly how much Canadian allyship is worth. On Sunday, American President Donald Trump announced — via a tweet — that he would be withdrawing U.S. forces from northern Syria. Such a move had been rumoured for months, but it was nevertheless jarring. As the drawdown began on Monday, there were already unconfirmed reports that Turkish fighter jets had hit targets in the Kurdish-controlled area.

Maybe it’s not ‘American style politics,’ maybe we’re just dirtbags

It’s a bit funny that there has been so much fear over a Russian disinformation effort in this election, given that Canadians seem perfectly willing to churn out disinformation all on our own. In recent weeks, rumours and innuendo have swirled suggesting that The Globe and Mail has been working on a hot scoop about Justin Trudeau’s departure from West Point Grey Academy, the Vancouver school he worked at in his late 20s.
