A lesson from LeBron James

As teens, you might find it difficult to tell your parents that you want to be an artist instead of a lawyer; or to tell a football coach that you’re just going to play baseball. Many teens don’t allow their dreams to blossom because they care too much about what others think.

Four years ago, Lebron James decided to “take [his] talent to South Beach”, to join the Miami Heat in pursuit of “not five…not six…not seven” rings. After four years in Miami, he announced yesterday that he’s following his dreams, and going home. It’s a tough pill for many to swallow, but how he did it can be a lesson for teens who are ready to go after their own dreams…

Be Gracious

I will always think of Miami as my second home. Without the experiences I had there, I wouldn’t be able to do what I’m doing today. -LeBron James

Pay tribute to people who have helped get you to where you are today. Acknowledge the love your parents have shown; express gratitude for coaches and teachers who have helped you on your path; and remember the little things others did that made a big difference for you.

Understand others’ point of view

I don’t want anyone thinking: He and Erik Spoelstra didn’t get along. He and Riles didn’t get along. The Heat couldn’t put the right team together. That’s absolutely not true. -LeBron James

James knew that we would all begin to speculate as to why he left. He cleared the air before the rumors even started. When you are sharing your dreams with friends and family, be ready to answer all the questions they will have before they ask them. They care about you, so consider their concern.

Admit that it won’t be easy

Everything is earned. You work for what you have. I’m ready to accept the challenge. -LeBron James

Family and friends may try to protect you by talking you out of pursuing what you really want—not because they don’t believe in you, but because they know the odds aren’t in your favor and would hate to see you be unsuccessful. Instead of complaining about the lack of support you are getting; thank them for caring, and admit that you are willing to take on the challenge.

Follow your heart

My relationship with Northeast Ohio is bigger than basketball…I’m coming home…This is what makes me happy. — LeBron James

One of my favorite quotes is, “Not everyone will understand your journey. That’s fine. It’s not their journey to make sense of. It’s yours.” You can’t follow your heart if you are trying to make everyone happy.
