Building Resilient Teams in 2023: Rethinking Communication Dynamics

In today’s rapidly changing world, the importance of effective team communication has never been more significant. A team’s ability to interact, share ideas, and problem-solve collectively can be the deciding factor between success and failure. But when was the last time you paused to examine the dynamics during your team meetings? How does your team react to unconventional ideas? Have your meetings become mere progress report sessions, or do they serve as vibrant hubs for innovative thought?

Author Peter Senge, in his renowned book “The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of The Learning Organization” (1990), emphasized the human tendency to lean towards familiar solutions that promise quick results when faced with challenges. Yet, in our resilient future of 2023, with the complexities and uncertainties brought on by the post-pandemic era, teams need to cultivate a robust process of dialogue that encourages sustained collective inquiry into everyday experiences.

Transitioning from a mere exchange of viewpoints to skillful discussion and meaningful dialogue is a journey that requires conscious effort and practice. During your next team meeting, pay attention to the patterns of interaction. How often do team members solicit others’ opinions or dismiss someone’s idea, even in jest?

Try an interactive exercise to foster more productive dialogue. Have your team members read a news article about a challenge relevant to your industry. Each member should devise their individual solution before coming together to form a collective response. Once this is done, ask your team members to reflect on the decision-making process. Was there a rich exchange of opinions? Were ideas collated, evaluated, and ranked for viability? Did everyone have a chance to contribute, or did a few members dominate the discussion?

Observing and understanding these behaviors in a non-judgmental manner can help teams set actionable goals to eliminate unproductive habits. In the face of the uncertainties and short-term thinking that characterize our current environment, teams that can leverage the collective skills of their members, embrace unconventional thinking, and cultivate a culture of constructive dialogue and accountability will be the ones to thrive in even the most challenging circumstances.
