Nice piece C.C.
One thing that really influenced me, beyond all these suggestions, is finding a way of working that fitted me as an individual. The message here, and the one pressed into me, was more, more, more. More reading, more connections, more writing, more. Which can be frustrating when nothing great comes out — which is how I think your student was feeling.
True, the things you suggest do help. But it was only when I disengaged, did I find the ideas coalesced in my mind enough, for me to go back to the screen to put them down.
Now I encourage everyone to find their own way (and step away once in a while). I wrote a bit about it here. Beyond this, how do you enc0urage students to explore their own processes of production?
