Yesterday in Syria

He carries her wrapped in blue plastic

blue like the sky yesterday when words

failed me as I attempted to write a poem

to capture the emotions that are numbed

in the toxic news. We say we are bombarded

with story after story with lies by the so-called

leader of the free world that blames and shames.

On her way to school

in the Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun,

a fourteen year old girl

watched a plane drop a bomb. A yellow

mushroom cloud turned a spring sky to a winter fog.

A car of first responders arrived at the scene

and they dropped dead. Drowning with fluid

filled lungs, mouths foaming.

Pupils reduced to a dot.

The little girl’s hair sways with his stride.

Her lips a grey blue.
