What’s happening in the — Shire 24th and 25th June 2017
Well, I can barely believe it’s the weekend again! But another weekend means another selection of fab events taking place in the Shire, and plenty for you and your family to get involved in. We really are very lucky to live in this beautiful pocket of the country.
Here’s my round-up of events taking place this weekend.
Horley Summer Fete and Dog Show
Horley, a small but perfectly formed village lined with pretty Hornton stone cottages, is where my mum grew up. On Saturday the village will be holding its Summer Fete and Dog Show from 2–5pm at the Church and Old School (this could be a wonderful trip down memory lane for us!)
You can expect a quintessentially English affair, with a tombola, raffle, Pimms stall, BBQ, plant stall, face painting and much more.
Chipping Norton Town Festival
From 11am until 8:30pm tomorrow, Chippy is hosting its town festival. There will be live music all day, vintage cars for the adults and children’s rides for the kids, a tombola, raffle, games, market stalls, and plenty of fodder to keep you dancing well into the evening.
All money raised goes towards local causes, so why not pop down and show your support.
Ohhh, this sounds like a goodie! A collaboration between Oxford Playhouse and Arts at the Old Fire Station, this event is described as a festival of brand-new theatre, comedy, dance, family shows, spoken word and music.
Running from 23rd June until 2nd July, there are some brilliant things to see and do with the short ones, including Dr Zeiffal, Dr Zeigal and the Hippo that can never be caught! This is an award-winning comedy for family members of all ages created by Mouth of Lions, a group of artists who are dedicated to creating work that fills their audiences with joy.

Day out with Thomas
Join Thomas and friends this weekend on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway. Meet the Fat Controller, join in with fun and games at the Imagination Station and of course, take a ride on Thomas and friends!
This isn’t exactly a cheap day out with adult tickets costing £20 and kids costing £12, but if your child is a fan of Thomas you’re sure to be the best mum or dad in the world (at least until bedtime!)
Bloxham Steam Rally
It’s impossible to write a list of events in the Shire and miss this bad boy — there’s really no escaping it if you live in or around Bloxham. In fact, I spent a good few minutes stuck behind one of these shiny steam engines on the way to the fish and chip shop this evening…
Now in its 49th year, the event takes place over two days and is literally overflowing with things to see and do. Of course there are the mighty steam engines, classic cars, motorbikes and caravans. There’s also live music, a funfair, a food tend, craft stalls pets corners and historic re enactments. Oh and did I forget to mention a licensed bar?
Fancy trying your hand at Javanese Gamelan? Don’t know what Gamelan is? No, me neither. Well, until I took a look at the Experience Oxfordshire site that is.
From 12:30 until 1:30pm this Sunday, you and your little ones (ages 5 and over) can try out traditional music on this fabulous set of instruments, which originate from Indonesia, in case the name didn’t give it away.
Taking place in Magdalen College School, this one sounds like a really fun, hands-on experience!
