Full-time MBA student Dan Coviello started his KU education knowing the university’s alumni network was a powerful tool. He wasted no time taking advantage of it through, a platform that connects students with alumni, faculty and staff.

“It’s a perfect opportunity to talk to new people, learn and see what makes the most sense for me as I go into health care,” Coviello explained.

Entering the industry will be a career transition for Coviello, so he used the platform to search for and reach out to several people who could share their experience in different roles, including a health care consultant and a health campus administrator.

Both connections led to further conversations, including recommendations for professional associations, job shadowing opportunities and discussions about possible internships.

Coviello credits MBA career advisor Alicia Green and the school’s Business Career Services office with helping him approach these networking opportunities strategically. He recommends other students determine what they’re hoping to get out of mentor interactions and prepare accordingly before they have a conversation — though that doesn’t mean they need a five-year plan already in place.

“I think there’s a misconception that you need to have things figured out before you start reaching out to people,” Coviello said.

Recognizing alumni were also once students charting their professional course can help take some of the intimidation out of the process, which is designed to help Jayhawks explore different outcomes and industries, evaluate college and career advice and expand their professional networks.

“KU, via these platforms, helps open doors to students, but it’s up to us to walk through and use them,” Coviello said. “I’m thankful that KU has also not only shown us the tools but also delivered them in a way that is meaningful.”
