Small Business For the Win

I don’t really make New Year’s Resolutions anymore, but I did make note of some things that I wanted to improve upon in 2018. One of those things was offering more support to small and local businesses.

Why

I am kind of a stickler when it comes to excellence in customer service. I have been in the service industry since I was able to legally work at the age of 15. That’s over half of my life. What does that have to do with anything? I personally feel like the warmth and attention that one receives at a mom and pop establishment far exceeds that of a chain or large organization. They also have more control in creating unique personalized moments for customers. No need to call corporate for permission.

These businesses often rely heavily on word of mouth for continued success and therefore, more times than not, work under the pretense that a satisfied customer is the best business strategy.

What Else

Did you know that small businesses create two out of every three new jobs in the United States each year according to Senator Gary Peters? I did the math and that is roughly 67% of available jobs for those seeking employment!

When you support small and local businesses, you are supporting a dream…some might say “the American Dream". You are helping to build up your communities and provide various opportunities for those who may not have had them otherwise.

What Now

I’m not telling you to go cold turkey on the stores that you’ve loved your whole life (because Amazon is my guilty pleasure). I’m merely encouraging you to try out a couple of small and local spots before the end of the year. I have been very successful in this endeavor, partly because I recently relocated and Columbus, OH is a small business oasis. The other part is because effective this year, I too am an entrepreneur and know that if I don’t provide excellent service, I don’t have clients.

So go ahead. Give it a try! The experience may surprise you.
