Five Things to Consider Before You Paint Your House

For a home improvement project, nothing revives, beautifies, and changes the appeal of a house as affordably and effectively as a coat of best exterior paints. A fresh coat of paint is sometimes enough to transform the house and its aura in no time. If you are thinking of hiring a professional, depending on the condition of the house and its dimension, be prepared to expend more. But if you choose to do the work yourself, with a little extra effort, you will be able to save a lot on the labour cost, and can choose how you want your house to look. Here are some critical rules that when kept in mind can ease the work and give a lasting result, whether you paint on your own or hire a professional.
1. Buy Quality Materials
Make sure that you are investing in good quality material including paint, caulking compound, and the primer. A good quality paint from a renowned paint company in India will last longer, covers better, and is easy to use, while also shielding your house from weather conditions as drastic as India’s. The best paints in India are the ones that offer a lifetime warranty against any defect in their finishes. Although, high quality paints are expensive but the ingredients that they contain offer better resistance and better finishing. Make sure that you choose the best paint available in India according to your needs and that has 100 percent acrylic. Flat finish paints, for instance offer a better siding and are good at hiding any irregularities and defects. On the other hand, semi-gloss enamel and satin paints are used more for trim purposes and are durable in nature.

2. Be Prepared
Before painting the house, the necessary preparation needs to be done. For the paint to last long and adhere well, the surface on which it is applied must be dry, clean, and not flaking. If this is the case, then scraping and sanding the surface needs to be done before the painting project can begin. You can begin by cleaning/washing the surface by using a water hose, a scrub brush, water, and some detergent.
Alternatively, you can use a pressure washer carefully not to erode the wooden surface (if any) or water the joints with high-pressure spray. The flaking paint can be removed using a scraper, while the tougher paint can be smoothened by sandpaper. You can choose between 60-grit and 100-grit sandpaper depending on the roughness of the paint. Afterwards, using a putty knife and filler, fill any holes or cracks and let it dry. You can also sand these areas later to even the consistency of the surface. The last step in the preparation would be to caulk the existing joints before applying the primer layer.
3. The Right Tools
Most home improvement stories and hardware stores rent out tools for painting. These usually include a roller, a high-quality brush, and for textured surfaces, an airless sprayer. An airless sprayer makes the work easy by ensuring that you can apply the primer and the paint by spraying it and then, using a roller to secure the adhesion. If this is your first time painting and using an airless sprayer, read the equipment’s instructions carefully in order not to waste time and resources.
4. The Right Weather
If you are not careful, the one factor that can ruin your home improvement project, especially the painting project, is the weather. The right weather conditions are a must — hot days, rain, windy days, or dusty weather, direct sun, low temperature, and dew can all spell doom for a good paint job. The ideal temperature for painting is usually between 10 and 32 degrees Celsius. A very hot and dry weather can cause even the best paints to dry very fast whereas temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius can prevent the adhesion process. Damp weather and even dew can cause bubbles to appear on the surface. Whenever possible, make sure that you are painting when the temperature is right and there is shade.

5. Use Proven Techniques
This is especially important if you are a painting novice. Make sure that you paint from top to bottom and always start with the overhang, so that fresh paint doesn’t drip over. Also while painting a siding, tape the windows and doors once they are dry, and then paint the trim. Immediately after painting the trim, remove the tape, in order to avoid any residue. Touch up only after the paint has dried, and only where t has not covered properly.
