Well, there was a recent article (sorry, I can’t find it but there are many like it out there; just google it) that said there was an epidemic of white males committing suicide, particularly middle aged white men. So much for white privilege, or maybe that IS the issue. They didn’t seem to know why, but I have my own theory.
Imagine you are a white male, who, as you all know, is at the top of the privilege pyramid, but you do not feel you’ve made it to where you should have considering all that privilege. Who or what can you blame? Not the lack of opportunity due to your race or sex. And you certainly don’t have a band of brothers you can speak to about your lack of opportunity and how you can regain that sense of pride despite the difficulties you face that are not your fault. It’s very difficult to make it in this country now, and yet, so many white men still feel the pressure to make it big because you hear so much about your privilege that you feel you should be mega successful, the way this country defines success (lots of money, power, beautiful wife, 2.3 kids, great house in the burbs, etc.).
That’s my theory as to why there is such an epidemic, although I could be wrong.
I really don’t think there is anything wrong with taking pride in your ancestry. That’s why there have always been country specific social clubs — Polish,m Irish, Portuguese, etc. It seems the only way it can be done is for it to be a European organization, and not a “White” one, so as not to be mistaken for being racist, although technically, any racial organization is by its very nature, racist. Racist just means it’s based on a race, but we’ve taken it to mean something much worse.
Life is a tremendous challenge, isn’t it? What’s OK for one group is not OK for another. The double standard. Interesting. I’m sure I’ll catch a lot of flack for what I wrote. I was always one of those white folks who yelled loud about racial discrimination against people of color, and I still am. But I also know that all people are equal, so we need to recognize that it’s not a shameful thing to be of European decent, and it’s also true that we’re all indigenous or ethnic to somewhere, but especially to the Earth.
