The Intuition Salone — NYC

What is a Salone (Salon), anyway?

Etymology refers to the origins of words; where they come from versus definitions. It’s a fun hobby of mine — words.

Sometimes I think about the names people are given and the clues they give us as to who people are, more of that here. Think about how many you know; Bernie made off with the money, Tommy Tune famous on Broadway, Storm Field the Meteorologist and Lorena Bobbit for bobbing…..well, you know the rest.

This came up as we launched our own Salone here in lower Manhattan called The Intuition Salone. Every first Monday of the month we come together and discuss a variety of topics relevant to women and learn a bit about our intuition.

Confusing to some, the Salon was not associated with beauty until 1922 when it became a replacement for beauty shop, probably a derivative of Barber Shop.

The original meaning of the word Salon was very different and had to do with a room in the home meant to host guests and invite discussion. Then comes the Salone that was an Italian invention of the 16th century which flourished in France throughout the 17th century. The French women who ran the Salone’s were known as salonnières.

The most recent and most famous Salones’ were hosted in Paris in the 1930’s by Gertrude Stein and included infamous guests like Ernest Hemingway and Pablo Picasso (as you may have seen in Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris)

The Italian Salone was an informal university for women to exchange ideas. Salones’ served a very important function. They allowed young attendees to connect with more established women. Ambitious women used the salon to pursue a form of higher education!

Not surprisingly, I have chosen the Italian spelling to name ours, The Intuition Salone!

Why Intuition?

Plato describes intuition as a pre-existing knowledge residing in the “soul of eternity”, and a phenomenon by which one becomes conscious of pre- existing knowledge. I believe there is valuable information that is not taught — that one must seek out in order to change and grow in today’s world.

Here is a snippet from last month’s Intuition Salone where we defined the elements of Feminine Leadership and discussed what it means to us:

Contrary to what society has shown us, the essence of feminine traits uniquely provide for great leadership. The traits of Feminine Leadership can be used by men and women.

Women have been entering the “man’s world of business” since 1900 we adapted and adopted male managerial and leadership traits. It is critical for women to feel comfortable utilizing our intuitive, empathetic, honest and caring nature to lead authentically.

ELEMENTS OF FEMININE LEADERSHIP

Integrity

Inspires trust. Being committed to your word is at the foundation of Feminine Leadership.

Adaptability

Just like water adapts to its environment, Feminine Leadership takes the shape required to get the job done.

Visionary

Feminine Leadership has a holistic and wider view vs. a laser singular focus. Considering what is right vs. what is needed for one side to win.

Passionate Collaborative Spirit

Empowering others is a natural feminine trait. Developing ways to be inclusive vs. exclusive and see the solution from all perspectives makes for powerful problem solving.

Nurturing Growth

Nurturing growth in the new economy means nurturing, cultivating and attracting vs. driving and pushing ahead. Today’s employees, teams, partners and communities are attracted to power vs. force.

Empathetic /Compassionate

Guided by intuition, empathy can drive compassion to build deeper relationships in the workplace allowing you to get the most from your team. We communicate through emotion. We also get emotional frequencies from others, the moon and nature! You can’t sell an idea or anything to anyone without emotion.

Come join us on the first Monday of each month as we explore such topics as accessing your intuition in business, setting healthy boundaries, confronting and clearing with anyone & more!

Our next Intuition Salone is right around the corner. We’ll be discussing how to set Healthy Boundaries, what boundaries are and are not, and how to clearly communicate your boundaries.
