Hello again, we reached the second part of the “How to start a website for your book?” series. Which I wrote to help the aspiring authors/authors and writer to set up their online platform with a step-by-step guide. You can find the first part and more info about this series “How to start a website for your book? Introduction” here.
In this post, I will talk about domains, their types, how to get? how to choose them and on which sites you can buy them?.
So let us start our journey.
What is the domain?
“A domain name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control within the Internet”. Simple LOL. I quoted the Wikipedia definition which you can find it here. In more simple words the domain is your online address or your name. Which will used by people on the internet to find you. Also, It used to tell your fans or people around you about your place on the internet. For an example thetransky.com, yahoo.com, twitter.com and many others.
What are the domain types?
There 2 types (there are more but to keep it simple I choose only 2 types and name them as simple as possible):
- Shared domain.
- Custom domain.
Which type should I choose?
You can choose the one you like each one has its advantages and disadvantage. So you choose the one that suits your need and budget.
This domain type can be provided be several platforms. For an example, wordpress.com. These domains need nothing to do with. And are simple to have and many sites offer this free. but Its main disadvantage is the domain name cannot be chosen by you, only a part of it, less customize-able, and you have to stick with the regulation and rules of the giving website and if the giving website went down or closed for any reason (Like being hacked or have IT issues) your website and all your work will go with the wind. Also, the length of the domain is long (thetransky. wordpress.com), so more difficult to find or forgot by your visitors. And last but not least it looks like a less professional website (my opinion).
So as a startup, knew nothing about websites, want free, and not bothered by the length or the risk I mentioned above, then the shared domain is for you. (But keep in mind if you plan in future to shift from shared domain to custom domain, it will be difficult).
This is the most used on the internet. As an example thetransky.com (not thetransky. WordPress.com), yahoo.com, twitter.com and many others. These are direct, shorter, more professional, customizable and, you have to pay a fee to get one (not expansive). This type which I will cover in this serious and I will give it a special attention because of its wide uses and its huge customize options available for it. You can make this domain the way you like. If you want a blog, a store, social platform or anything else it is your choice to choose. Also, you can choose a costumed email (like email@example.com instead of firstname.lastname@example.org) and this comes with many benefits which I will cover it later.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the domain you want to choose. It starts from $0.99 (the price of my domain LOL) To $2Biliion (Google.com).
Where can I buy a domain?
You can buy it online. There are many websites who offer to sell a domain, For an example GoDaddy.com the most famous one (I bought my domain from them), Squarespace.com, Fozzy.com or namecheap.com. There are many others you search on Google and you will find many options which you can buy from. I prefer GoDaddy.com because of it famous, their support is good, and offer discounts special for new users. But at the end, your choice and all are the same.
What is the difference between .com, .org, or .info?
All are the same, but .com is more popular so when you purchase it, it will be more costly.
How to choose a domain name?
You can choose any word which comes to your mind. but, I will give you some tips you may follow. And will help to drive more traffic to your site:
- Try to keep it short: This will help your fans to remember your address.
- Try to choose a word related to your genre: This will help people to drive more traffic in future (I will cover this part later).
- Stick with your budget: avoid buying the expensive domain name for your first website.
Now after you choose a domain type and domain name, We choose how people will reach your online home. On next post, I will talk about how you set up your home and bring your website to live. If you have any question Please ask me on my email or sending me a DM message on twitter, I am always there to help.
