Did you know… less than 1/3 of Canada’s fisheries are considered healthy?

According to the 2021 Fishery Audit Report, only 30.4% of Canada’s fisheries are healthy.

Nearly 80% of depleted fish populations lack rebuilding plans to restore them back to healthy levels. For those that do have plans, the biggest problem is the implementation of the policies that Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has put in place. In 2021, the DFO published rebuilding plans for two critically depleted populations — the Atlantic mackerel and the iconic Norther Cod. However, adequate timelines and targets required to help the populations recover were missing. Fisheries also face increasing pressure from overfishing, climate change and pollution.
