Things to read on your commute that aren’t Twitter

Here are my favourite books I’ve read over the past few months. They’re all around the topic of starting something, being persistent and working really hard. Definitely an unintentional theme there.

A book about innocent 🍹🍓🍊

by Innocent

How innocent got built up from a group of guys wanting to leave the world in a slightly better place than where they found it. Focuses on how to create a brand and product that stays authentic even through scaling. Pictures throughout. Found myself drinking a lot of smoothie while reading.

Grit 🎓 🏈 ➗

by Angela Duckworth

Studies what determines who succeeds and who doesn’t. It’s a combination of persistence and working really hard on improving, even when others would quit. And your cohort can help you get there.

#GirlBoss 👩‍💻 👗 💪

by Sophia Amoruso

Ignore the Netflix series and read the book instead. An awesome example of a company that grew by figuring out what people needed and then creating it. Though Nasty Gal since got sold for a fraction of its highest valuation Sophia’s outlook on how to keep your customers happy is super useful.

Scrappy Little Nobody 🎬 🎭🎤

by Anna Kendrick

How becoming an actress is 90% wearing uncomfortable costumes and getting rejected. 10% loving what you do and getting recognised for it. Lots of sarcasm and self deprecation as well as owning the good things. Also Anna Kendrick said she’d buy me a horse if I bought her book so…

Outliers 🏒 👨‍💻 🎸

by Malcolm Gladwell

Follows how some very successful people became successful. Hint: It’s not wake up really early, drink a smoothie and optimise your task list. Try circumstances + putting in 10,000 hours to take advantage of them.

Why Not Me 🎥 ✍️ 📺

by Mindy Kaling

I read this after seeing this excerpt somewhere (probably Twitter). She puts her success down to having earned it. And earned it by working really hard for a very long time to get there. Funny and honest throughout.
